Episode 26, "The Story of Kisily Pewick" and "Interview with Skye McMicheal"

I have the honor of presenting the story of Kisily Pewick as told by Rosenda Nolasquez.  Kisily Pewick was born in Cupa. His mother took him away to another village after a war in which the entire Cupa village was killed.  He was just a baby.  At the other village he was bigger and stronger than the other kids.  He also proved to be a better hunter.  After several years his mother told him who he was and where he came from.  The clip that I picked from the story is where Kisily Pewick’s kids are named.  There is Kaval, Blacktooth(Pe’tama Tulnikish) and Norte. The story appears in the book “Mulu Wetam” and starts on page 35.  After the story, there is a Birdsong by the Inter-Tribal Bird-singers.  The show will conclude with the second part of a conversation with Skye McMicheal as he discusses the importance of the “Drum” at a Powwow.  He also speaks about the uniqueness of Pala’s Sixth Annual “Honoring Traditions” Powwow.

Episode 23, Coyote and the Juncoes, Honoring Ceremony at CSUSM

In this episode it is a privilege that I will play a recording of Rosenda Nolasquez as she tells the story “Coyote and the Juncos”.  The story is in the book “Mulu Wetam”.  Mrs. Nolasquez and Jane Hill wrote this book.  If you have a copy of this book, the story is on page 114.  So sit back and relax or follow along in the book as you hear the story “Coyote and the Juncos” in Pa’anxily (Cupeño Language).

I had the privilege of attending and ceremony where several Native Americans were honored.  They were all graduates at the California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM).  There were graduates from Rincon Indian Reservation, Pechanga Indian Reservation and several other tribes.  So check out this ceremony.

In this show I look at the song "Chemesh Ataxem Kuupangax". I point out words to listen for in the song. The words are; ekulyi (little), Ekukulyi (little, plural), kikitem (boys), nishmalim (girls), nu'push (eyes), ni'pushlyu (to look at us), naq'a (ear), ans also ne'naq'ma (to hear us). The song is performed by Paul Miranda. There is an interview with Cindy Sullivan, nee Allen. She talks about being a Native American female in the military for 20 years.

Pala Life Past and Present 3, Robert Smith on Sovereignty and Tuk Ma Chi(Silent Night)

In this episode I look at the words to "Tuk Ma Chi" (Silent Night).  Tuk ma chi yax yax wene (Silent Night [Holy Night]), Peta’ema chexyaxwe (All is calm [All is bright]), Nawishmali  pe ve’aw. Pulyinish Ichaa pe mi’aw (Round yon virgin [Mother and Child], Holy Infant so tender and mild),  Kuu’pa ma yaxyaxwe, Kuu’pa ma yaxyaxwe (Sleep in Heavenly peace, Sleep in Heavenly peace).  There is a BirdSong "Kusaanem Chiip", by Paul Miranda.
